This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) Doug Manuel has been building bridges between Africa and the occident for more than 20 years. His latest project ‘Do You Speak Djembe?’ brings together a band of world-class African and international musicians in an innovative fusion of music and rhythm from different cultures. The public also perform, each audience member with a Djembe drum – these are the ingredients of a unique musical that has performed more than 100 concerts across Europe since 2014. A part of the proceeds of the show go to ‘Lighting Up Lives’ Doug’s initiative that brings solar energy to Abéné, a rural village in Senegal, West Africa. This unique interactive musical will debut their first show in the United States at TEDxHollywood. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at 🤍

Dedicated to the people of Baro. Please share. Life has a rhythm, it's constantly moving. The word for rhythm ( used by the Malinke tribes ) is FOLI. It is a word that encompasses so much more than drumming, dancing or sound. It's found in every part of daily life. In this film you not only hear and feel rhythm but you see it. It's an extraordinary blend of image and sound that feeds the senses and reminds us all how essential it is. TREES: Before cutting the tree there was a ceremony and an offering held for the tree. The tree was not only used for the jambe. For me, my favorite one is to play 3 tones and 5 slaps, but instead of playing them straight I'm gonna swing the rhythm and this is gonna help me learn the feeling of the West Africa music as well as change my technique from the tone to the slap. I play 3 tones, then I play 5 slaps. Tone, slap. An then I put it together and I let it breath. Helps me keep time and helps me feel the swing of the West Africa music. When I'm comfortable I can go faster. I can play faster. Even faster. That's my favorite hand pattern. So my, I have a different one, different idea. How to help you very begging, how to do the thing you get it. So my, I can start with the tone, then I can go the slap, then I can go to bass. So if I do all that together, I can do, then I go to slap, then one bass. If I want to go slow, if a want to go a little more faster I can go. If I want to go fast. This is it, djembe power for the beginners.

If you look closely, you see the conga is a little taller, djembe in this time is a little shorter. The tension on the skin is achieved by the pulling with these metal rods. The djembe is with a rope. Okay? The bass that comes out of this small bottom is played here. Your bass? My tone is played here. Speaker 2: My tone is right here. Speaker 1: My slap has an advance from the tone area to the slap area like this. More center. Speaker 2: So my slap doesn't go in the center. My slap stays into the drum. My slap is like this. Speaker 1:Wow. I hope everybody caught that. We're going to play a little bit for you to show you the color and sound of this wonderful instrument playing with another wonderful instrument. The conga and the djembe. Now you've heard the difference in sound, but there's really not that many differences. You can appreciate the differences in both instruments, the conga and the djembe.
